Please RESTORE the Bookmarks BUTTON in the New Firefox

In the newest version of Firefox 57.0 (released November 2017), the Bookmarks BUTTON is now gone and replaced with a Library button.

This is extremely inconvenient to me as a regular user of Firefox and browsing. The "customize" solution by adding the "Bookmarks Menu" in the More Tools section does *NOT* restore the missing functionality that Mozillas has erased from the previous Firefox versions.

  • Again, please restore the actual simple BOOKMARKS BUTTON that would take you *immediately* to your Bookmarks Folders and preferred / customized order of Bookmarks (NOT the "recently bookmarked" mess that the new Firefox has).

This is a terrible User Experience, and I'll be switching to Chrome if Mozilla doesn't fix this.

Thanks.

The previous Firefox(es) had a clean, simple BOOKMARKS BUTTON and clicking that *once* would take you to your Bookmarks, how you personally organized it, with your folders, etc.

That functionality is just GONE right now.

I'm doing a poor job communicating that this button still exists. I'm attaching a screenshot showing what I'm trying to explain.

Sorry this is not installed on the toolbar by default. There is a "real" bookmarks menu button available. You can add it from Customize, or use the "Library" button as described in the article linked below:

Does that help?

Thanks jscher2000. But that doesn't solve my problem. The solution you mention merely adds a button that then takes you a RECENTLY BOOKMARKED menu (not *your* customized Bookmarks Folders, Order of Bookmarks you organized things in, etc.).

You still have to go all the way down to "Show All Bookmarks" and then you're like 5 extra clicks in. Terrible UX design for Firefox and it still doesn't solve the missing Bookmarks BUTTON.

If your button displays the wrong menu, your toolbar configuration may be corrupted, or your Firefox program files may be damaged.

Toolbar Reset

Please use the "Restore Defaults" button at the bottom of the Customize pane, and then re-add the button to see whether it works correctly after that.

Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars

If the button still shows the wrong menu:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. It's not essential to uninstall Firefox, but you can if you like, saying No to any request about removing personal data.

It only takes a few minutes.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox to a convenient location:

https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Using Windows Explorer/My Computer, rename the program folder as follows (you might have one or both):

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox =to= C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox =to= C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in step (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Then you will need to re-add the button to the toolbar.

Any improvement?

Hi jscher2000,

Thanks again for the quick reply! I should've been more clear: It's not that I personally "lost" my Bookmarks Folders, it's that the Mozilla Default View for your solution of adding that Bookmarks Folder is wrong: It only shows Recently Bookmarked.

If you choose to add the Menu Bar back on (very top, with File / Edit / View / Bookmarks...) clicking on that Bookmarks Drop Down *will* display all of my personalized Bookmarks Folders, the order I arranged my Bookmarks in, etc., but that's an extra amount of Screen Space that is lost / wasted by turning that whole "Row" on.

The previous Firefox(es) had a clean, simple BOOKMARKS BUTTON and clicking that *once* would take you to your Bookmarks, how you personally organized it, with your folders, etc.

That functionality is just GONE right now.

I hope Mozilla restores this, or seriously, I'm switching to Chrome.

Hi jscher2000,

Ah finally! Your screenshot does look like the Bookmark Button I was hoping to restore, thank you! :) What's so confusing / frustrating is that trying similar steps (alternate UI branches) results in just the Bookmark *Bar* or Recentl Bookmarked only. It works now.

I hope Mozilla restores this as DEFAULT though, I'd imagine lots of people are frustrated by this.

To recap for others that might run into this issue, the specific steps jscher linked to is this:

How do I add the Bookmarks Menu button to the toolbar?

If you want to display the Bookmarks menu button on the toolbar, you can add it using the Library button:

* Click the Library icon, then click Bookmarks.

  • Click Bookmarking Tools, then click Add Bookmarks Menu to Toolbar, and the Bookmark Menu icon (star on tray) button should appear next to the Library icon.

Do that specifically and it works. Thanks again!

Why not use the Show Side Bar Button and poof you have the Bookmarks Tree.

Thanks Pkshadow. :) Yah I tried using it a few times, but it takes up some real estate on screen I'd rather have for browsing. But I'm glad I found the fix (previous post)!

Good to have the Bookmark Button back. Thanks.

Welcome.

fyi if did not know : You can drag those any where you want to : https://www.howtogeek.com/333110/how-to-customize-firefox-quantum-and-remove-the-white-space-around-the-title-bar/ As well as what is already there and click the Download Button in Customize and un-tick Hide.

Ya Side bar does take up room, not so bad if using it quickly or on a 32"..

Thanks Pkshadow, that's really helpful.
