The latest version of Tb is driving me nuts. I am aging, my mind is failing, my learning curve is close to flat if not negative. I want to reinstall the previous version of Tb, and use it henceforth. I no longer have the mind or the patience to figure out the changes which come with each new version.

I have forgotten where to find the version I am presently using. I have forgotten a lot. Will someone please help me get back to a version I know how to use, and tell me how turn off further updates?

Security? I think I have my computer locked down about as tightly as an amateur can do it. If I cannot be secure without more complexity and more learning, then I can no longer be secure. I can only use what I already understand.

I am now invited to download Firefox 57. Do I dare? I understand it has some advantages over previous versions. I would like to find a summary of its advantages, and some idea of how much learning is required to use it. If required learning is more than minimal, I will not be able to use it. I will not install any further update. Would 57 be a good place to quit?

Please help this aging mind continue using the computer as long as it can.

FF:

  • Click on 'Menu icon' - it has three horizontal lines.
  • select 'Options'

A new tab opens showing options.

  • Bottom left pane click on 'Advanced'
  • click on the 'Update' tab

there are three choices.

  • Select the last choice ....'Never check for updates' to stop update notification and never install them.

Thunderbird can also be set to not check for updates.

  • 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options'

This opens the 'Options' window.

  • Select 'Advanced'... usually located top far right.
  • select the 'Update' tab
  • Select the last choice ....'Never check for updates' to stop update notification and never install them.

click on 'OK' to close and save changes.

There hasn't been any signifant changes between the last couple of updates. In fact, you would not really have noticed anything in several releases.

re: The latest version of Tb is driving me nuts.....I have forgotten where to find the version I am presently using. Confirm you are currently using version 52.4.0 This info is located here: Help > Troubleshooting Information Under Application Basics it will say which version.

However, it would be useful to know what version you really were using before. It sounds like you were using something very dated.

When you open Thunderbird, tell me what you see that is different. Explain what you used to see. Sometimes, the developers just switch things off expecting users to know how to enable them again. It is infuriating for those who cannot adapt as easily, but between us we could work out what is unexpected or missing etc.

It is best to enquire about Firefox browser in that forum, but here are some links with info on version 57.

I'm staying with version 52.5.0 as I use Windows Vista OS. Firefox Version 57 will not work for me.

I thought I sent this off a week ago. I don't know what happened to it.

First, FF 57, I found the release notes. It would require far more learning than my diminished mind can handle these days. I will not be able to use it. Also, version I am now using is doing some annoying things which my previous version did not. So I would like to return to an earlier version yet.

What has changed on Tb? A large part on my mental difficulty is loss of memory. It may take me a while to recall a list.

When I type an email, I have repeatedly found the Send functions inactivated. This is new. The new version seems to decide whether or not to let me send what I just wrote. Previous version I could send whatever I wrote. I wondered if I might have omitted something, but Subject and Address were filled in.

I have also found a few other changes which are very annoying or stumped me. I just stumbled on one a few seconds ago, which I have forgotten this quickly. I no longer have a normal mind,

My brain is dying (MRI shows it shrunken and deformed), and my mind with it. I cannot handle any more challenges. I am trying to return to earlier versions I already know how to use. Please help me find these these familiar versions so I can continue to use the computer, with these versions, no more updates, until I die. My life expectancy now is one or two years.

I am currently using Tb v 52.4.0.

Did you have any particular reason for going all the way back to 38.8? I'm pretty sure that I used forty something with little difficulty.

I would like you to pick a version to use for the rest of my limited life. If you think 38.8 is the best version to stop and stay with I will trust your judgement.

Dare I stray between silos? I have the same problem with Firefox. Can we deal with that here, or must we move to another forum?

Again I don't know which version of Ff I am using now, nor do I recall where to find it. My present version has only four pages for Options, against eight or ten pages in the previous version. I would like to return to my previous version, or an earlier one if you think that preferable to use for the rest of my limited life.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help with this. Over decades I became computer dependent . I have struggled with updates since Tb 29, which required winning an Easter egg hunt to operate. Recently I have found updates very difficult...well, I guess people who still have full decks have managed, but I am now playing with half a deck at best. Senility goes in only one direction. I greatly appreciate your help to stay in the game as long as I can.

Well you have been complaining about the last several versions so I threw a dart and it hit version 38. Here pick any version you like. https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/

Thank you for the version lists. Many of the version numbers include a "b". Does this indicate a beta version?

You recommended 38.8, the last modification of 16 to the 38 series. Is the last modification likely to be the best of the series? Thus your choice of 38.8?

The Gateway to FF versions has timed out. The Directory listing of Tb versions which you just resent, remains. Are Directory Listings less volatile than Gateways, and thus to be preferred? In any case, I would like to recover the Firefox listing which timed out.

Mozilla is pestering me to install 57, now or later. Is there any way to ask Mozilla stop these notifications, or add "Never" to the options?

PS This thread seems be split between two tabs. This is something from the other series, which you seem not to have seen. I will terminate the second series with this.

Thank you for your reply. It appears that it will be useful in the near future, after I have replaced the latest annoying-to-infuriating versions of Ff and Tb.

I think I am going to need on-site help to do this, to be sure all data on the present versions is transferred. My mind has now deteriorated to such an extent that I dare not attempt things I would have done a few years ago.

And please tell me, is Toad Hall located in a windy willow patch?
