TB 57 disables some 'legacy' add-ons, and may not work properly if some others are enabled. If it runs in safe mode (hold Shift when you launch TB), check if there are add-on incompatibilities, and either disable or remove them.

Just to be clear - as far as I know Thunderbird 57 beta does not disable legacy add-ons. However, an add-on may fail for any version change because some programming feature the add-on needs has changed in Thunderbird. This requires the add-on author to update the add-on.

There is further complication because add-ons are not version checked for compatibility by the add-on manager - i.e. all old add-ons are presumed to be compatible, even though they might not work.

I checked two addons:

• Adblock plus - is not listed at https://adblockplus.org/en/about - so at minimum I suspect it has not be supported in Thunderbird for a long time.

• Sieve - a newer version is available somewhere, per review at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/sieve/

After I updated from TB 56b to 57b, Tools/Add-ons would not load, which was solved by removing the Add-on Compatibility Reporter add-on. Two old add-ons, Quote Colors and mailtweak, were removed, despite working in 56, and could not be installed. Dorando keyconfig add-on was still installed, but the Options window was empty. An alternative to Adblock is uBlock Origin, which has a WebExt. version working in FF 57, and is also a TB add-on, but when it's installed in TB 57 the Options window is empty.
