Cannot get bookmarks to work despite applying all your help notes under Firefox support

The bookmark section of the screen appears when I click on the bookmarks sidebars but I cannot populate it with any bookmarks. I have tried all the self help instructions supplied by Mozilla but to no avail. Any ideas what more I can do?
