Problem synchronising with Google Calendar
I have successfully installed Thunderbird 52.3.0 on two computers, but can't get the calendar working on a third. I uninstalled Thunderbird, wiped every trace of it from the PC then re-installed it. I copied the profile from a 'good' PC to a folder on the problem PC and opened it via Thunderbird. I have all my e-mails working, but the calendar is not updated. I have tried removing Provider for Google Calendar and re-installing it.
I can see no difference between the three PC's, yet two work and one doesn't.
Strangely when I open Thunderbird then select Calendar from the menu the calendar tab opens but the page is corrupted (see attached). Note that the toolbar is duplicated, there is an additional option to select what is shown, and the calendars in the list are not ticked. I can tick them but my events are still not displayed. If I close the tab then re-open it the picture looks correct, the calendars can be ticked but my events are still not shown.

Ideally, when there is an issue like this we ask for Thunderbird to be run in Safe Mode so as to eliminate the effects of add-ons. Of course Lightning is an add-on so we can't do this in your case.
I would suggest temporarily disabling all the add-ons that are not needed for the address book - so that means all but Lightning and Provider.
I don't like tabs overmuch myself so I have not tried any add-ons that coerce things into tabs; but since these add-ons are tinkering with the way things are displayed, I'd be suspicious of AddressBookTab in particular.
AddressBookTab 1.5
Works with Thunderbird 3.0 - 28.0.
Get rid of this add-on. You can search AMO for alternatives. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/
Without the add-on, is there any difference?
If not, disable all other add-ons except Lightning and Provider for Google Calendar.
Modified
I had already tried disabling all add-ons except Lightning and Provider for Windows and it didn't make any difference. I have just tried again and proved again that it doesn't make any difference
I had already tried disabling all add-ons except Lightning and Provider
And you didn't think that was worth mentioning?
Try to create a new profile using profile manager. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/using-multiple-profiles
Start Thunderbird with the new profile via profile manager. Then install the latest version of the provider add-on, and set up your Google Calendar.
Does that work?
I will try. However, as I stated originally I am using an exact copy of a profile that works correctly on another PC
I created a new profile in the Users>AppData>Thunderbird folder. I added my Google e-mail account and can correctly see e-mails. The Lightning add-on is automatically included, and I installed the Provider for Windows add-on then re-started. Calendar doesn't show in the menu, but I can open it via the Events & Tasks menu. I was then able to add my Google calendar and see it correctly.
HOWEVER: All my PC's have a separate partition that I designate S: and use for storing all my data . I have created a folder S:\Thunderbird on each PC for storing the profile. I closed Thunderbird then copied the contents of the Users>AppData>Thunderbird folder to a new folder S:\Thunderbird2 and configured Thunderbird to use this profile.
If I open the Users>AppData>Thunderbird profile it works correctly. If I open the S:\Thunderbird2 profile (or the S:\Thunderbird profile which is copied from a working PC) I have the original problem. It seems therefore that the problem is related to the location of the profile, since in each case the profile contents are identical to profiles that work.
Please post the contents of your profiles.ini file.
That's interesting. I now have 3 profiles:
Users>AppData>Thunderbird: works but doesn't have a profile.ini file
S:\Thunderbird2: is identical to the above but doesn't work, and doesn't have a profile.ini file
S:\Thunderbird: is copied from a working PC but doesn't work. It includes a profile.ini file with the following contents:
[General] StartWithLastProfile=1
[Profile0] Name=default IsRelative=1 Path=Profiles/6ue3unm7.default Default=1
I now have 3 profiles: Users>AppData>Thunderbird: works but doesn't have a profile.ini file
C:\Users\<your_user_id>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird
That isn't a profile, it's the location of your profiles.ini file. That location is fix, and cannot be changed. There is only one profiles.ini file for all profiles. If you have multiple profiles.ini files, you're doing something wrong. All existing profiles are to be listed in the profiles.ini file, regardless of their location in the file system. Your actual profile folder is 6ue3unm7.default. Why your other profiles aren't listed in profiles.ini I don't know.
If you want to migrate the now working profile folder to another location, just go ahead, but make sure to adjust profiles.ini accordingly. If you don't know how to properly adjust profiles.ini, don't guess, ask. And stop copying stuff around, it doesn't seem to do you any good.
I have followed the instructions given on https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/moving-thunderbird-data-to-a-new-computer . It works perfectly on one PC, so I now have Thunderbird working correctly on the original PC and the second one. However, when I followed exactly the same process on the third PC the calendar doesn't work. I have tried numerous ideas to identify the reason, including moving the profile to different locations.
In desperation I have uninstalled Thunderbird from the problem PC, then cleaned it (using Ccleaner) and fixed the registry. I have deleted all reference to Thunderbird, then re-installed it.
I then copied the contents of the following folders from a working PC to the problem one:
C:\Users\<your_user_id>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird C:\Users\<your_user_id>\AppData\Local\Thunderbird S:\Thunderbird
I can therefore see no difference between the installations on the two. Thunderbird works identically on both, with the exception that the calendar doesn't work on the second one.
In desperation I have uninstalled Thunderbird from the problem PC, then cleaned it (using Ccleaner) and fixed the registry. I have deleted all reference to Thunderbird, then re-installed it.Probably a waste of time. Most configuration issues are due to the profile and not the executable. Thunderbird doesn't use the registry, so you'll have just cleared or broken your file associations. OTOH CCleaner can seriously mess up both Thunderbird and Firefox with its unwarranted fiddling with their profiles.
I see three paths there. Don't waste your time with …\AppData\Local - it's used just for caching. All the action is in …\AppData\Roaming.
How are you adjusting profiles.ini to cope with all this? The only copy of profiles.ini that matters is the one in …\AppData\Roaming, and it needs to be modified to point to or reference the actual data store on S:\.
How and in what way is S:\Thunderbird superior to …\AppData\Roaming? What does this achieve for you?
Modified
In desperation I have uninstalled Thunderbird from the problem PC,
Beats me. You already had a working profile. Anyway, good luck.
Thanks for the advice ref …\AppData\Local
This is the content of …\AppData\Local\Thunderbird\profile.ini:
[General] StartWithLastProfile=0
[Profile0] Name=Thunderbird IsRelative=0 Path=S:\Thunderbird Default=1
[Profile1] Name=Default User IsRelative=0 Path=C:\Users\Alan\AppData\Local\Thunderbird
I have a policy of using the C: drive purely for applications, and keeping all data on S:. I then do an incremental back up of S: every night, maintaining a 30 day rolling history so I can retrieve anything that might be inadvertently modified, corrupted or deleted. That is why I keep my Thunderbird profile on S:
