Thunderbird has failed to update properly despite rebooting PC, now it won't start when I respond "No" to message asking if I want to restart computer.

version 45.6.0 update is incomplete and says it needs a restart. This doesn't work after repeated attempts. Various methods of opening the app without trying to complete the update have failed. Installing over the existing copy gives same problem. The Thunderbird shortcut logo has also morphed in the last week or so into a generic one ie a CD with its box behind. Is that a clue? Note that Firefox has shown a similar behaviour recently in flagging up a failed update - but at least I can start the browser! I have Windows 10.

It sounds like there are other problems with your computer. Thunderbird and Firefox not working properly are just symptoms.

The first thing I recommend you do is a Thorough Check Disk. Your hard drive could be going bad. Some computers have hard drives that fail within a year of buying the computer ("lemon" hard drive), but any hard drive can fail over time. How to run a "Check Disk" in Windows. Look a the section for Thorough "Check Disk".
