How can I close the drafts window and return to mail? It's hung.

I'm running Sierra on an iMac and have used Thunderbird for years. Today it is hung in the drafts window (which I wasn't using), and I can't access the normal mail window. Command-W just closes the window. Selecting the Mail and Newsgroups menu item brings up the drafts window. Any help would be appreciated.
