Thunderbird appears to lock-up performing script ".../calendar-chrome-startup.js" (McAfee?)

Windows 10 & Thunderbird both recently updated. Soon after trying to do anything with Thunderbird it stops responding the mouse clicks or attempts to scroll. When I try force it to close by right-clicking on the relevant taskbar icon, I get a message saying something to the effect that script "chrome://calendar/content/calendar-chrome-startup.js 136" is running and do I want to stop it. Thunderbird then closes if I say yes.

Edit: If I delete the {e2fda..} folder from my profile to stop lightning loading as suggested elsewhere, the message about the script stops when I try to close the window, but it still locks up as soon as I try to do anything, so I cannot even move or resize the window, never mind do anything useful

Disabling the McAfee add-on there rather than in the McAfee menu was the answer - many thanks for you time & trouble.

For anyone else with similar problems, you will probably need to go to Thunderbird safe mode and positively disable the McAfee add-on, even though it is already disabled because you are in safe mode.

I had just finished going through the check list, and my results are below just in case they help avoid the problem arising:

(1) Using version of Tb downloaded yesterday, 45.3.0

(2) Add add-ons are disabled

(3) Working in Windows safe mode had no effect. I am only running McAfee AV software, and disabling this has no obvious effect on the problem.

(4)Am not trying to access gmail with Tb.

(5) Have not set up any newsgroup accounts

(6) The Windows Search feature has never been enabled as far as I can remember. I have no memory of ever using Google desktop Search.

(7) Yes, I am on Windows, but have not moved any Thunderbird data.

(8) Tb memory usage is around 90 MB in safe mode, & 96 MB in normal mode.

(9) Disabling the Enable Global Search and Indexer has no apparent effect on my problem

(10) Renaming "global-messages-db.sqlite" which was 43 Mb very slightly improved the situation, in that it did not lock up till the second click to view an email message, and then allowed another click a couple of minutes later. The new file was only a little over 1 MB. Attempted closure soon afterwards leads to a "chrome://msktbird/content/mail-msktbird_3.js:566" script error, but it does seem to recover after a few minutes.

(11) I do have some largish folders, but got a warning from McAfee when I tried to download the toolto determine their sizes.

(12) The problem seems to occur long before re-checking for emails after the one that is done successfully on load.

(13) No

(14) Probaly less than 50 contacts

(15) My panacea.dat file is only ~ 27 KB.

(16) No longer getting script errors since disbaling Lightning

(17) The Tb CPU load is < 1% in the locked up state according to Task Manager. The PC was mid-range desktop 3 years ago.

(18) All of Tb is on a local SSD, but the same problem occurs when I run from a cloned local hard drive.

(19) There is no disk or network activity reported by Task manager when in the locked-up state.

(20) I have no RSS news reader account.

(21) Can't see anything here that would expalian the problem

(22) Using Windows.

Please start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled - win10 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode Does problem go away? Please post your results.

Thanks for the rapid response. No, as far as I can see the behaviour is the same.

However as a result of looking at replies to vaguely similar problems, I tried starting Thunderbird itself in safe mode (by holding down the shift key while double clicking on the Thunderbird icon) and then disabling all add-ons. This does seem to fix the problem, but it returns when I start it normally. This is a major sep forward, but I don't know how to start Thunderbird in this manner when the is first booted.

Are you using the calendar functions? And what happens if you disable the Lightning addon at tools | addons and restart Thunderbird?

more options

Thanks, but no, I don't use the calendar.

That was one of the things I tried as soon as I cottoned on to the safe mode (without which I could not even get to that menu. I even uninstalled Lightning to be extra sure). Without Lightning the lock up still happens, but the script message on forcing closure no longer appears - sorry if I did not make that clear.

1. What type of calendar did you have defined when you were testing Lightning?

2. In some respects good news that you don't get the script warning with lightning removed/disabled - that means Lightning was only the victim. The bad news is that means the cause is something else.

Thanks for your quick reply

Have started looking at the reference., and hope to be able to reply in full later. However my first impressions are that several bits are out of date due to changes in Tb and elsewhere. I use McAfee, but stopping this has no effect on the problem.
