I used the recommenced v.17.0.9 to import Eudora (yes, I know I'm 10 yrs behind :-) ). But how do I update to the current version of TB? The About screen says "Thunderbird is up to date" and I don't see anything in the Tools menu to manually force an update. This is on Win 7.

Control Panel > Programs and features select Thunderbird and click on uninstall

Then go to this link and download the current version for Windows OS in the language of preference:

Thunderbird program and Thunderbird profile folder with mail accounts and emails are not stored in the same place. Uninstalling only uinstalls the program not the profiles.

I deleted the old version of TB and installed ver. 45, but when I go tools/import, the import wizard is greyed out. I have tried it with Eudora both running and not; still can't run the import wizard to work.

what is there to import? when you uninstall Thunderbird your data and settings remain in the profile until you reinstall. That is unless you uninstall in a manner other than that recommended, like using some uninstall utility which will trash your user data.
