Recently moved from firefox on ubuntu 10.04 to v47 on lunbuntu LXLE and imported my old firefox data. I find that the click boxes on the security page for saved logins and master password don't function.

hello, firefox won't save your passwords when you've set it up to run in permanent private browsing mode ("never remember history" in the options > privacy panel).

Settings for privacy, browsing history and do-not-track

Try the Firefox version from the official Mozilla server if you currently use a version from the repositories of your Linux distribution.

I don't have that set. Firefox has picked up my master password and website logins from the old version and uses them correctly - it's just that I cant see or edit them.

I'm using that version.

It may be good idea to use a suppoted OS, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS was EOL in 2013/2015

Are you sure the Firefox version you have is Mozilla and not a Ubuntu Canonical ? I note on my Ubuntu 14.04 LTS the user agent strings are:

  • Mozlla DE: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:49.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/49.0
  • Canonical: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:45.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/45.0

Yours includes the word Ubuntu so I would think it could be a Canonical Ubuntu build.

  • User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux i686; rv:47.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/47.0

I'm not using ubuntu 10.04? I will try reinstalling Firefox, though. I did copy my Firefox data directory from 10.04 Firefox and replaced the default one on LXLE 1204 before starting Firefox for the first time.

Sorry I misread your original post. Two thoughts

  1. What versions of Firefox are involved.
  2. It is often better to transfer individual profile files, not directories.

If the fx versions were the same there should be no problem. However if an old 10.4 did not have a reasonably up-to-date Firefox there could be incompatibility issues. For instance the pair of files used for passwords changed some time in 2014.

I suggest you create a band new profile for the new install of Firefox.

Check that works and can save logins. Now follow the instructions in this article to transfer the old and overwrite the new pair of files logins.json & key3.db (You will have a more complicated task if the old fx has signons.sqlite)

Take care to use the correct profiles. Both installs are likely to have multiple profiles. As explained in the article the easiest method of confirming the profile location is from a running Firefox.
