Thunderbird keeps sending me 'Fail error' messages for email I didn't send to recipients I don't know
Each day, I get about 10 - 20 error messages in my in-box (from post-master) with send error messages. The point is I didnt create the original message and I dont have the recipient in my contacts folder. Could there be a virus running in thunderbird on my machine (win 7, x64) . I run eset visus protection and the scans are clean.

A spammer used your email address as From address, and now you do get the undeliverables. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backscatter_%28email%29

Thankyou very much, I think you have the problem identified exactly here. I have a couple of rules set up already to intercept these message automatically (Subject contains ……) but some of them slip through which is odd, because if I run the filter manually it intercepts and moves them to trash then. Is the problem likely to go away and is there any risk of further hacking or more damaging action from the spammer? Best, ALan
It will stop after a while. Just be patient, and let your filters do the work for now.
