I can't watch videos on twitter or instagram! Is this a Java problem? How do I fix this?

My OS is Vista Ultimate and I'm using Firefox 46.0.1 (I also use Seamonkey version 2.40 and have the same problems on there!). My Java and Flash plugins are up to date but the videos still won't play! Is Vista too outdated for them to work or do I have to configure something differently?

Not sure about Instagram, but Twitter uses the built-in HTML5 player in Firefox to play videos.

I agree with the suggestion to check for updates to your graphics card/chipset drivers.

Your HTML5 video support level

Please visit these two test pages and tell me the results:

(A) The YouTube HTML5 test page: do you have all blue boxes except the last one? If you have other red boxes, which ones are they?

https://www.youtube.com/html5

(B) On the following page, scroll down past the table at the top -- that is not a live test, just old information -- to where the players are supposed to appear, and try the H.264/MP4 tester:

http://www.quirksmode.org/html5/tests/video.html

Does that one work?

Thank you both for such quick replies!

FredMcD - I tried running my Windows Update agent multiple times in the last few days but it keeps "checking for updates" for hours and hours. I even left it on overnight but it never stops checking. I've tried the services.msc thing and stopping and restarting the update agent, but it still goes on and on searching each time. I also entered "net stop wuauserv/net stop bits/net stop cryptsvc, etc" in the command prompt and tried renaming the catroot and software distribution files, but it wouldn't let me rename the software distribution file :S So far, nothing's worked yet.

jscher2000 - I have two red boxes in the HTML5 test page - H.264 and MSE & H.264. The H.264/MP4 tester doesn't work, either :<

Hi PipiPupi, have you ever made any settings changes related to "Windows Media Foundation" or "WMF"? Please check these preferences:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste mp4 and pause while the list is filtered

(3) If the media.mediasource.mp4.enabled preference is bolded and "user set" to false, double-click it to restore the default value of true

(4) If the media.mp4.enabled preference is bolded and "user set" to false, double-click it to restore the default value of true

(5) In the search box above the list, type or paste wmf and pause while the list is filtered

(6) If the media.wmf.enabled preference is bolded and "user set" to false, double-click it to restore the default value of true

If you changed anything, please test again. If not, hmm, I'm not sure why your Firefox isn't decoding MP4s.

FredMcD - I forgot to mention that I also tried the Fixit thing but it never got past the "installing powershell" part of the installation. I tried it again and left it overnight and still nothing happened beyond that point.

jscher2000 - I checked they're all set to default/true.

See if they can help.

Some versions of Windows Vista were shipped without Media Foundation due to antitrust issues. In that case, you can add them using this old download. You may then need to re-run Windows Update to patch it up to the latest version.
