Browser History Not Really Being Cleared (ver 46) - Even if you think it has been

Seeing my browser hsitory iin a new tab is a problem. The following settings do not resolve it:

1) Setting Options:Privacy:History to Never Remember History 2) At Options:Advanced:Network clicking both Clear Now buttons 3) In about:config setting browser.newtabpage.enabled to false

What is disconcerting is that all of these have been proposed in other posts as accepted answers, and they do seem to have an immediate effect. However, performing the third "fix" on on my list above (after also doing the others, which had no effect on the new tab) only seems to work until I revert it back to TRUE. Then the history which supposedly is not being saved shows up again. This happens even when I restart the browser and then revert back to true.

The worst part about this is that we are led to believed that the browser history is not there, yet it really is there. Apparently a bug (mentioned in another post with respect to version 44) has revealed that this hidden history exists and, if not for this bug, the average user would not be aware that there is a hidden history that "somebody" might easily find.

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

Note that you need to exit permanent Private Browsing mode (Always use Private Browsing mode; Never Remember History) to be able to clear personal data.

You can consider to clear the disk cache directly on the hard drive. You can find the location on the about:cache page.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.

You can create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.
