Thunderbird seems to have recently updated. Now there is an asterisk next to the message count in the folder list. This is in my default account. Looks like this Accountname (*82)

I know the 82 is number of unread messages. Why the asterisk? Never seen it before

Chosen solution

Asterix means some of the unread count are in sub folders currently collapsed and not in view.

In some release notes I think is about it. Back a version or two ago. I am thinking V31 might have been when it first appeared.
