Firefox worked 3 days ago; shut down comp, rebooted today & entire program & files are gone.

When I shut down my computer three days ago, Firefox was there and working fine. Today I booted and clicked the icon. I got the message that firefox.exe was missing. I browsed for it myself and there are only two files in the firefox directory. They are "AccessibleMarshall.dll" and "install.log." The log file is dated today and the first line in it states: "Mozilla Firefox Installation Started: 2016-04-30 16:45:55." That's when I turned my computer on. I did not start any sort of installation procedure. What happened? Thanks! Paul

You can try if it works if you only remove the Firefox program folder if you can't uninstall Firefox.

Do a clean reinstall of the current Firefox release and delete the Firefox program folder before installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows Registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your personal data like bookmarks is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose personal data when you uninstall and reinstall or update Firefox, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

Thanks for the quick response! Unfortunately the uninstall file is gone along with all the others.

There is an uninstall.exe file inside the Mozilla Maintenance Service directory, but it only uninstalls the 'maintenanceservice.exe' program. (BTW: when I run maintenanceservice.exe, nothing happens).

Do you know how I can clean the registry myself? Or where I can find out how?

Thanks again! Paul

I couldn't uninstall my original so I just downloaded the most recent version and installed that. Everything seems to be working fine.

Now I'm going to try to find out what caused that so I can prevent it from happening again. Never had a program just disappear like that. Very odd.

Thanks again for your help! Paul
