Where is Sessionstore.js located?

Hi everyone,

I need some help. I'm a newbie to this and so very basic instructions would be insanely helpful.

I was using Firefox fine until I attempted to wake my laptop up from sleep this morning when it would routinely hang....which led to my whole Windows 7 system being hung. Reboots, uninstalls/reinstalls of Firefox haven't helped it yet. My theory on this is that one of my tabs that would be in the session restore (that's basically at the point it's hanging), is causing the issue, so I would like to restore a session from a backup and not have it look to the

However since the last time i needed to do this, Firefox has changed the way you restore sessionstore.js and there's now something called recovery.js.

I believe recovery.js from last night might be suitable to restart from. (I'll even take previously.js from six days ago.)

My problem is I don't know where sessionstore.js is now located to try and replace that with.

So can someone a) tell me where sessionstore.js is now located and b) walk me through the steps using recovery.js or previously.js?

Thank you very very much.

Firefox uses the sessionstore.js file in the profile folder to store session data, but this file is only present when Firefox is closed. The sessionstore.js file is created from recovery.js when you close Firefox and is removed and copied to previous.js when you start Firefox to make is possible to restore the session at any time.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

You will normally find these files in the sessionstore-backups folder:

previous.js (cleanBackup: copy of sessionstore.js from previous session that was loaded successfully)
recovery.js (latest version of the sessionstore written during runtime)
recovery.bak (previous version of the sessionstore written during runtime)
upgrade.js-<build_id> (backup created during an upgrade of Firefox)

You can copy a file from the sessionstore-backups folder to the main profile and rename the file to sessionstore.js to replace the current file (make a backup copy of the current sessionstore.js).

Took recovery, renamed it sessionstore, moved it into main profile folder, didn't work.

When I launch Firefox it goes to new tab like usual (i.e. there was no previous session to launch), and then right when it used to give me the about:restore screen, it just absolutely freezes.

Is this a sign of malware? Something else? What's going on here? Should I try to launch Firefox Safe Mode? How do I launch that when I can't even launch the browser fully?

It's a Windows 7 laptop. No previous issues. Firefox 44.0.2, the latest version.

Thanks, Jeremy

You need to rename such a file to sessionstore.js

Windows hides some file extensions by default. Among them .html and .ini and .js and .txt and you may only see a file name without file extension. You can check the file extension (type) in the properties of the file in Windows Explorer via the right-click context menu.

So even though it's a JS file merely renaming it sessionstore won't work?

I must type in the actual name sessionstore.js?

Firefox looks for a file named sessionstore.js, so if you do not rename the file correctly then Firefox won't find it.

Well, in the end, a system restore solved the problem.

So not quite sure what happened, but it's over, at least for now.

Thanks for all your help,
