Firefox does not block anti-virus applications.

Firefox will block add-ons for Firefox which are installed by any anti-virus program or security suite, if the add-ons aren't signed by Mozilla. That application's developer decided to make those add-ons and install them for Firefox to be able to use.

Firefox 'treats them' by how they are installed; as add-ons for Firefox, based upon how they are installed.

Thanks for your response.

Can I "sign" the add on myself or does this mean that I should contact the antivirus provider?

Contact your anti-virus provider. Self signing isn't allowed, they will need to submit the extension to Mozilla for signing and it will be returned to whoever submitted it.
