Firefox should show a jpg. Can you provide the link to the page the jpg link is on? Note: sometimes, a link is bad.

Nope, not a bad link. See for yourself. http://forum.arduino.cc/index.php?topic=376607.0 There is a link to a jpg file in the first post.

I can open in Opera not in Firefox 44.0 JPG does not appear in the Applications tab.

It opened fine for me.

I get a pop-up asking me what I want to do with the file.

I am running Firefox 44.0 32-bit. Don't know if that makes a difference.

Yet, if I go to FIle ---> Open File ... and choose a file on my desktop, I can open find.

I'm not logging into the forum, which may or may not make a difference...

When I click the link, Firefox correctly identifies the content type of the image as a JPEG (first screen shot).

However, when I look at how the server is identifying the download, I'm not sure how Firefox did that. The server sent the "generic" binary download content-type with the file, which normally would trigger what you got (second screen shot, showing the details of the download as recorded in Firefox's Network Monitor, one of the developer tools).

Maybe the fact that the server sent a file name ending with .jpg is allowing Firefox to figure it out?? But in that case, why isn't it working on yours?

Hmm... not sure.

What you do is select "open file" and then select Firefox.

You are not understanding what I am saying. Firefox is capable of opening a JPG yet when the link is a JPG file, it asks me what i want to do with it. That shouldn't happen. In Opera, it knows to automatically open the JPG file.

What you do is select "open file" and then select Firefox.

This particular download generates an Open/Save/Cancel dialog because it is sent with content-disposition:attachment, which is how sites indicate they want content handled as a download instead of content displayed in the tab.

To address the non-recognition of the file as a JPEG, do you want to try this:

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Open Directory" button. This should launch a new window listing the contents of your profile folder.

Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
  • (menu bar) File > Exit (on Windows, not sure about on Linux)

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename mimeTypes.rdf to something like mimeTypes.old (in case you later decide to undo this procedure).

Start Firefox back up again and it should restore default associations for download content types. Any difference on that site?

Note: This will reset your PDF viewer to the built-in viewer. If you want to change that, see: View PDF files in Firefox or choose another viewer.

I did as you suggested. My MimeType.rdf is now 3.3 kB instead of 10.6 kB, but it still did not solve the problem.

I am still getting the choice to open the file with AESCrypt or the choice of some other Application or to save the file.
