I have very important contacts in the calendar for up to three years in advance. I have tried all the help stuff but cannot find any thing about backing it up.

Can I back-up the calendar and if so how please?

First of all backup the entire Thunderbird profile. That includes your calendar data. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_:_FAQs_:_Backing_Up_and_Restoring
