broken New Tab setting

I had an event where the first time I realized I had a problem was a page appearing that asked me to finalize installation of an addon I didn't want. The addon in question had set both my homepage setting and default search provider to Yahoo as well as overriding the New Tab page. I removed the addon, set my start page back to default , and changed my search provider back to my preferred option of Bing. After that, whenever I tried to open a New Tab it would show a bizarre address in the address bar and the resulting page would be blank. I read on someone else's question about "about:config". How do fix this show my copy of Firefox will go back to it's default behavior as to what is displayed when I open a new tab?

You can use this extension - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/searchreset/ - which will reset a bunch of prefs and then the extension will disappear. From one of the Mozilla developers to fix problems like you are having.

Hi, try this: Type about:config into the address bar, press Enter, accept the warning, scroll down to browser.newtab.url and make sure 'Value' is set to about:newtab (right click > Modify, to change it if necessary, taking care not to alter anything else).

If you want the Firefox Start Page as the new tab, type about:home instead of about:newtab. After making changes you may then need to restart Firefox.
