The computer started after being turned on this morning with a few "bells and whistles" but is now screaming full-time. I have to turn it off because of the noise, but I don't know if I can turn it on again. What should I do?

Is it even the computer ? If it is the computer then is it only with Firefox running ? If so it is probably some advert or radio station in one of the tabs or Windows.

Your computer or Windows operating system will have methods for muting sound, but it is possibly better just to turn it down whilst you look for the culprit.

I'm not sure about Windows Vista, but Windows 7 has a volume control in the notification area at the lower right of the task bar, near the clock. If you click that, does it show volumes for different applications? If it only shows one column, look for a link titled Mixer and click that. (Screen shot from Windows 7 attached.)

Depending on what program is accessing the speaker, you may be see controls for Firefox, for the Flash plugin, or both. If you try muting different sources, can you figure out which one is playing the annoying audio?
