Thunderbird is not responding when deleting messages SOLVED caused by Attachment Tree addon
Thunderbird is "Not responding" for a couple of minutes when deleting one or more messages. All messages are downloaded via POP3, Deleted Items folder is usually empty, but sometimes there are 2-5 emails in there.Mostly problem occurs after fresh computer start and first time use of Thunderbird which is running on Windows 8.1 with a really fast hardware. There are no Add-Ons installed. And it is not related to antivirus. the problem is there with any antivirus or without it.
It is a simple bug.
It does get similar problem (less often) when sending emails with inline images or when SSL certificate changes on the server and exception has not been accepted yet. This is the problem since 2013 when I started using Thunderbird.
It is not present on some of the slower laptops I use.

Start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled - win8 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-safe-mode - win7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7 - XP http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx
Still In Windows safe mode, start thunderbird in safe mode - http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/safe-mode
Does problem go away?
- If no, then problem is either: bug in Thunderbird, in your Thunderbird profile, your mail provider. Please post into topic the contents of Help | Troubleshooting | copy text to clipboard
- If yes, (still in Windows safe mode) ... start Thunderbird normally
-- If problem is still gone, then cause is a program loaded during windows startup. Possibilities include: antivirus SW, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates -- If problem is NOT gone, then cause is likely a Thunderbird addon - eliminate them by disabling each one at a time in Tools | addons | extensions and restartingRead this answer in context 👍 0

The problem was with Attachment tree and sorting plugins/addons. They were outdated and not necessary since Thunderbird already was doing what they were.
Thanks for updating the topic. So you problem was with https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/attachment-tree/
