Hmm, release version is 24. so your working with a pre release beta.
Anyway, try windows safe mode with networking and see if thunderbird runs fine then
Thanks for your reply Matt......I'm definately not a "tech head" so your suggestion makes me a bit nervous. I am your average "home" Mum user and my interpretation of "networking" is in a business situation. How I would have managed to get a "pre release beta" version I have no idea, all I did was accept the usual message from Mozilla that there was a new update available for Thunderbird. Now my question is....am I able to return to my previous version? I notice that other people have posted similar questions, so it seems I'm not the only one to have this trouble.
Some better instructions on what to do with links to Microsoft of how to do it is you do not know.
If you reach out from your computer to get mail or browser the internet you are using the exact same networking protocols you would in a business situation, if you have a wireless printer or your television gets content from the internet, the same networking protocols apply. So your understanding is correct, it is only a scope that is at issue.
Go to http://getthunderbird.com and download the current release version at any time. Unlike other programs Thunderbird is happy to upgrade, downgrade and generally switch versions on a whim. Good thing to as I use daily testing builds, release versions and the occasional beta. For all practical purposes the beta versions are as stable as release anyway, but add-ons may give you more grief as tey may not have been release for the beta version as yet.
Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
- If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.
