Why does my Profile folder keep being stuck in read-only?

I have been attempting to fix the "Firefox is already running but is not responding" problem. The solution works only temporarily. Within a day or two, it happens again.

I think this is the problem. I am following these instructions to un-check "read-only" attribute of the Profile folder.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-firefox-stores-user-data#w_finding-your-profile-without-opening-firefox

But the "uncheck" doesn't take. I check the folder after and folder is still read only even after I uncheck it and click OK. I would post screenshots but don't see a way how.

Windows shows a green block for folders in the Read-only box, but not a real check-mark. Only a check mark in the Read-only box means that a folder or file is Read-only. Windows doesn't check all the files in a folder so instead displays a green block to indicate that it is not sure. You need to look at each file individually to see if any are read-only. Easiest to do that is to make the Attributes visible in "View > Details" mode: Choose Details in Windows Explorer.

Thank you for the quick response. I'm confused by what I find inside, which is zero read-only files that I can see, but all folders ARE read only.

I cannot un-check the read-only attribute of the folder, despite there being no read-only file within that folder.

Attached is an example.

The folders aren't read-only. You can test this by clicking the box a few times to cycle through the various choices and have a real checkmark appear (you shouldn't apply this though). Just ignore the colored box and only take action if there is a checkmark present.

Ignore the Read Only where the folder properties is concerned. IF the option is checked, then the folder is locked. Just the color means nothing.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} While you are in safe mode; Press the <Alt> or <F10> key to bring up the tool bar.. Then Tools > Options > Advanced > General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.

Poke around safe web sites and see if there is still a problem. Then restart.
