I tried to update Firefox v29.0.1 and got the message on the about page afterwards: Firefox is being updated by another instance. I'm on os x 10.8.5. No virus software. all add-ons disabled. It may have happened because when it updated the firefox restart button didn't work. So I quite it and then downloaded a new version and installed it. But now it won't go away.

Are there any implications of this message? How do I resolve it?

Help please.

You can check for issues caused by an extension.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Hi Cor-el That didn't work. As I mentioned I don't have any add-ons enabled and it already has the default theme.

I need to somehow reset the FF updating funtionality without resetting all my settings.

Same here. I have tried it on Aurora (33.0a2), Beta (32.0), and Release (31.0). I'm on OSX 10.8.5. I have tried disabling all addons, safe mode, and even "reset firefox"... all to no avail.

The only way I can update right now is to download a fresh installer and overwrite the currently installed version. That's how I got Beta upgraded from 31 to 32.

I was able to update Aurora from 26.0a2 to 33.0a2, but immediately after doing so I could no longer update it, either.

I have enabled app.update.log in about:config, but I can't find the log file. I thought it was supposed to be in /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/, but there is no "updates" folder in there.

Such log prefs are about logging error messages to the Browser Console (Tools > Web Developer)
