Like a lot of people my blank page had been hijacked by AVG. This post is not so much a question as the answer. None of the support answers I saw solved the problem but a Google search "avg hijack blank tab" yielded the following link which solved the problem:

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CDgQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fnewmediamike.com%2F2013%2F06%2Fremove-avg-secure-search-toolbar%2F&ei=3odxU_GwAtjooATulYCYAw&usg=AFQjCNHSMcjJYn6pMBa_YKn7KrpkHXftsw&sig2=wruND3cBa_VwyKgbLHKVtA

Basically, when AVG updated their anti-virus program, they by default installed their "AVG SAFE SEARCH" toolbar. They did this while my system was unattended so I was not able to deselect their toolbar during install.

1.) Goto the CONTROL PANEL 2.) Select "Add or Remove Programs" in Win XP, or in Vista: "Programs and Features". I don't know what Win 7 or 8 calls it but it should be similar. 3.) Uninstall: "AVG SAFE SEARCH TOOLBAR" 4.) Reboot if necessary.

Problem solved. Save yourself from rage at AVG.

Regards, Teri

Hi Teri,

Just an FYI, if the new tab page is still being taken over by AVG or by any hijacker, you can reset the pref for the new tab page in about:config. The pref is browser.newtab.url located at about:config
