I am sitting in hospital with a weird problem. The connection is open and thus not secure. I have successfully connected my 2 android devices, however my Windows Asus laptop is being barred by firefox. I only run firefox. It is a dead end because firefox refuses to allow me to access the net at all. So now I have to get my wife to go and download chrome and see whether that will work. Why can I not override as u understand the risks I also use Norton 360 with its VPN.

Hi Jhon,

Firefox blocks access to unsecured login pages by default for your safety, especially on open hospital networks. Since you're using Norton 360 with a VPN, try disabling the VPN temporarily, then connect through Firefox—sometimes VPNs interfere with captive portal pages (where you accept terms). If that doesn’t work, switching to Chrome or even Edge just to log in once is a quick fix—then you can go back to Firefox afterward.

Regards

I resolved the problem by installing Brave. That works, so bye-bye Firefox after 14 years. I appreciate security, but this is my decision. I understand the risks and should be allowed to continue or not. But thanks for the speedy response.

Hi John, what message were you getting in Firefox? Was it an error that the site certificate didn't match?

A lot of public access points require you to accept an agreement, and will hijack your initial request for Google or whatever to a router. This causes a certificate mismatch error. As a workaround, I use a non-secure address like:

http://example.com

After accepting the terms of use, I can browse normally. Obviously I can't speak for your specific situation, but it's worth checking whether that is the problem, since it can happen to any browser.

I powered off and restarted. Problem has disappeared. Thanks for your response.
