on PC A, firefox just lost all open tabs (even pinned ones), history (for this device only thank gods), open windows.

I installed a windows yesterday on a different PC (lets call it B), and logged in with the same microsoft account PC A uses. Then installed firefox and logged in to sync (on PC B).

Did that somehow overwrite the profile? Even though it was a different PC?

Mystery solved.

"Clear history when Firefox closes" was checked. Needless to say, I didn't activate this, this is slightly terrifying to think that it's possible to do something in firefox and this can lead to that option getting activated.

Maybe there is a keyboard shortcut and my cat managed to find it? No idea. But this option needs to be protected behind a "are you sure?" popup.
