2 issues. 1) Have used Firefox for years on Windows 10 on a laptop. For the last 2 months I have had great difficulty signing in to do online banking with Bank of Montreal (BMO). I get a lot of 404 error messages. Clearing the cache and history works occasionally, but not consistently. I do not have this problem when I use Chrome and I do not have this problem with any other site. This is really frustrating and inconvenient because it is so inconsistent and yet so important. 2) For the last month, every time I start Firefox I get a message telling me Firefox was unable to find previous settings and I have to select 'Start new Session' as it seems unable to restore itself otherwise. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Do you use a bookmark or are you starting with the main (home) page of this website?

If you use a bookmark to access a specific page then instead navigate to this page starting with the main page or with the sign in page in case there is a problem with this bookmark.

Thanks for the suggestion. I usually start at the website for BMO Investorline and there are links to all the other BMO services, which is where I select 'Online banking'. It is also possible to start at the main BMO.com web site, select 'Bank Accounts' and it takes you to the very same sign in page. Either way, I can run into the 404 error message right after I attempt to sign in, even if I completely re-enter account number and password from scratch.

To FredMcD Thanks for the reply. The actual page says 'Sorry. We're having trouble getting your pages back' and gives you a choice to 'Restore Session' suggesting that tabs may be the issue, or 'Start new session'. I quit trying Restore and now just go straight to Start New Session. Whatever it is, something is not quite right. As for the website issue and 404 errors, its simply BMO.com to get to their links to 'Bank Accounts' to get to the sign in page.

You get this when you try to access the website, or when you start the browser.

As to the 404 errors, try

To FredMcD As to your first question, I get 'Sorry. We're having trouble getting your pages back' when I start the browser.

As to the 404 errors, I have cleared cookies and cache many, many times and refreshed the website over and over. Occasionally it helps, but not consistently. At some later time, I will go to sign in and the issue may have magically resolved itself and I can access the bank site as normal. I will play with the Troubleshoot mode for a while and see if I can learn anything. Ditto for the Hardware Acceleration. I appreciate the tips and links.

You may have corrupt sessionstore [v56] sessionstore.jsonlz4 file(s). Delete all sessionstore* files and the sessionstore-backups folder.

Don't delete the files if you need to rescue any data from them, just move them out of the profile folder to some location where Firefox doesn't look for them. You can try to read out their contents using this tool: https://www.jeffersonscher.com/res/scrounger.html

Type about:support<enter> in the address box.

Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To its right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Windows: Show Folder; Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder

Linux: Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Directory. To its right press the button Open Directory.

Locate the above file. Then rename or delete it. Restart Firefox.

There is a change in Firefox 96 related to cookies and insecure sites.

As a workaround for now you can modify this pref on the about:config page to revert this change.

  • about:config => network.cookie.sameSite.laxByDefault = false

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.

To FredMcD I deleted the 'sessionstore-backups' folder as directed. There was no ' sessionstore [v56] sessionstore.jsonlz4 file(s) that I could see. At any rate, it changed nothing. I still need to select 'New Session'.

To cor-el Thank you for the reply. With all the links there is a lot to digest in your reply. Firstly, I am unclear as to which of the two issues you are addressing here. Could you please clarify that?

You say There is a change in Firefox 96 related to cookies and insecure sites, but what insecure site are you referring to? I am dealing with the website for one of the biggest banks in Canada. Surely it is ultra secure. If this is just a workaround for now, then truthfully I am not sure I want to delve into such changes with my level of computer knowledge. What could go wrong is all I can think.

You say There is a change in Firefox 96 related to cookies

This affects several websites. Not because of a problem with the site, but because of a change in the current Firefox. It is being worked on by Mozilla.

To FredMcD The home page and tabs are set to 'Firefox Home(Default)'. Typically I don't really need to 'Restore Session', so I 'Start New Session', but it is indicative that Firefox is experiencing errors and crashing, which is concerning.

To FredMcD OK I have been patient so far , but now I am furiously upset. I followed the directions to create a new profile and now my desktop is unrecognizable , my bookmarks seem to have been vapourized, and it has been splashed with all manner of useless recommendations from Pocket for which I have no use at all! This is a disaster and exactly what I feared might happen. This is similar to what happened when I did a refresh of Firefox last December.

How can this be fixed, please?

Your bookmarks and other things are still in the original profile. What we want to find out is if the problem you were having is still there.

To FredMcD OK, I have had my lunch and I have calmed down. To update, while on the new profile, I did shut down all the tabs and windows and restarted the computer to see if the restart issue had changed, but NO. When restarted, Firefox came up with the page offering to 'Restore session' or 'Start new session' , just as before. I also went to the bank website, but with blank fields for the account number and password and no saved logins available, I was unable to log in. I have gone back to the original profile. I detest the new one. It required me to login to Firefox before I could reply to your post. That was annoying. With the original profile I can reply by clicking on the link in the email and it goes right to the last post, which is much more convenient. What now?

To FredMcD and cor-el I think I may have stumbled on to a solution for the issue with the online bank account. Over 2 months ago I installed a program called Open Shell which makes Windows 10 look like Windows 7. Since removing this shell, I have been able to do online banking as normal. I will need to monitor this for several days before I can be absolutely sure it is resolved. The intermittent nature of this issue made it hard to link it to this shell, as there were updates from various sources going on at the same time, including BMO Investorline who introduced their Version 2.0. So, fingers crossed, that will fix it.

However, the problem with the 'about:restore' tab that comes up when starting Firefox still continues. Any new ideas? Thanks in advance

Oh, I see the tab actually says 'about:sessionrestore'. Sorry about that.
