URGENT*** HiJack Attempt/attempt to steal login and password on firefox today

more options

Firefox has a new attacker who is locking up the screen and attempting to force the end user to give them a USER NAME and PASSWORD. You cannot get around this, as it flashes at you to force you to click on the page. So, I did CONTROL, ALT, DELETE and pulled up the TASK MANAGER, and closed it from there. I then UNINSTALLED Firefox, and reloaded it again. It went right back to the same page again, and the threat was still there. So I did a CUSTOM DOWNLOAD this time, and when it opened up, it asked if I wanted to reload my TABS (saying "Oops, Firefox cannot find your tabs). I CHOSE NOT TO RELOAD the tabs, and was able to get rid of this NASTY VIRUS/IDENTITY THEFT/COMPUTER Hijack ATTEMPT. PLEASE, identify this ASAP, or people are going to loose their computers!

The HiJacker Window pops up in the middle of the screen, and says WARNING*** Call Microsoft at 1-833- and a number which is not really Microsoft. It tells you someone is attempting to invade your computer (but in software terminology). And tells you to call the 1-833 number. This may be one that I recently heard someone else talk about.... that if people call that number, they are offered a clean up service for $250 dollars or so, and the person steals money from them. But, I am not sure it is the same problem, or if it is a NEW one.

You can report such a site at; Google Report Phishing Page {web link} which is the same when done while on site by going to Help > Report Web Forgery

A way out of the trap is to (force it if needed) Close Firefox. Wait about 20 seconds for Firefox to finish closing. Right-click on the Firefox icon and select Open New Window. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Sometimes this works. If it opens, close it by Menu > File > Exit. This will flush out that web page from the Session Store.

Hi ChrisIndeed, there are a number of different ways that scammers can construct pages to try to trap you there. It can take quite a bit of calm perseverance to escape them (especially difficult if there are voices playing from the page!).

Unfortunately, reinstalling Firefox and clearing your last session doesn't resolve the issue permanently. You may encounter such a page again when you browse sites that use the ad networks which spread these scams.

It may help to install an extension to block ads. This one is popular: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/

With any content blocker, you may find pages that do not work correctly until you unblock one or more sources of content in the page. Keep an eye on the add-on's toolbar button to manage the blocking.
