Why firefox is constantly uploading stuff when no webpage is opened?
I recently noticed Firefox had been uploading for no apparent reason. When no webpage is opened, Firefox uploads around 1MB per minute. Furthermore, after hours of monitoring Firefox's behavior. I noticed Firefox established 200 connections for no apparent reason either. My computer is pretty clean, and I don't have any "non-famous" plugin installed.(e.g: I only install world-known ones like: adobe flash, quick time etc) I can't understand why a browser would need to upload information?

What websites did you have open? Many email providers constantly check for me new emails and notify you when a new email comes in which may be the reason why data is always being sent out.
Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
- You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
- Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.
Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"
If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.
Thank you.
Sorry I made an error in my post, Firefox is uploading around 0.01mb per minute. It's extremely small amount, but I would like to know why.
Also to feer56, I said I have no webpage open, so I don't think that is the case for me :(
And Thank you Waka, I will try that shortly :)
Firefox will request lists of attack sites and forged websites if you have it set to block those sites. Also, if you have telemetry enabled, Firefox will send reports about performance, usage, customization, etc. to Mozilla.
This may also be a ping to your ISP.
See also TCPView.
I have the same problem. Analyzing the upload traffic shows that it is only going to youtube.com There are approx 100 connections per minute with total uploaded data about 300KB
I will try to attach a screenshot from the connection summary.
I have opened single Firefox tab with a pdf file from another website. No traffic is going to that website.
Hi waylander
Try to delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox profile folder.
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Multiple_profile_files_created
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible).
Did you try Safe Mode?
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
- Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.
Thanks for the advise!
I found out that all this is caused by an extension called "Flash and Video Download 1.36".
After disabling this extension all was ok.
Thanks!
