Starring a message has nothing to do with selecting messages to delete. Select the message/messages you want to delete and press delete on your keyboard. You can also right click and select delete. There is a delete button on the header of the message Pane. Pressing F8 toggles the Message Pane on and off. You can right click the Mail Toolbar, select customize, find the Delete button and drag it to the toolbar.
