"not responding" locking up constantly, can't type message

My email locks up everyday. It stops letting me type and email or will not let me read an email without giving the error, Thunderbird not responding. I have to go in and clear out the temp files at least once a day. This seems to clear things up for awhile but then the error starts all over again. This is driving me crazy. What can I do to fix this problem?
