how to run torbirdy properly on mac osx with tor?

I am using the latest versions of thunderbird torbirdy and tor on a mac os x 10.7.5. when i open thunderbird it tells me (in green writing at the bottom of the screen) tor is enabled: tor. does this mean i am ready to send emails ? or do i have to have tor actually running at the same time? can someone please explain this a little better??

You best ask at a site that supports Tor. Just because they chose the Mozilla products for their implementation does not mean anyone here understands Tor.

My guess is that tor would need to be running for anything tor to work.

I think you just have to run the add on and you should be set, but check out those resources just in case.
