You can install an extension that will add that functionality. It is called Muter, and you can install it from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/muter/

Hi,

If it is a particular video or audio on a web page you can try to mute or disable audio using the audio/video controls on the web page. Please note that Windows XP doesn't have a per application sound management. You would usually have to mute or lower the system sound. This would affect all the applications.

You would have to disable plugins or use an extension like Flash Block on Windows XP.

Does that mean that firefox itself doesn't have enable/disable sound option?

By the way, thanks for the answers!

Yes, Firefox doesn't provide an enable.disable option, though not sure if any add-ons may make it possible. Firefox by itself cannot control the sound unless the media being played in a tab/webpage provides the sound controls. Usually webpages leverages the controls provided by the technology used to display the media sound, for eg. HTML5 player, Flash Player, Windows Media Player, Quicktime Player, etc. and Firefox uses the concept of Plugins (Tools (Alt + T) > Add-ons to enable these audio/video technology except for HTML5. Firefox by itself is a basic webpage browser with no audio/video player functions, though it is possible to enhance the functionality of Firefox through the concept of add-ons.

Hi Vivek. I guess that was what I anticipated. It may not solve my problem, but now I know I should stop looking for something that isn't there :-)

Hi Chris. That extension does it. It was the kind of solution I was looking for. Never really tried these extensions before...
