  • "Manage Bookmarks" was last used, if I recall correctly, in Firefox 2.
  • In Firefox 3 that was changed to "Organize Bookmarks"
  • In Firefox 4 that was changed "Show All Bookmarks".

Have you tried the View->Sidebar->Bookmarks? Kind of a pain to use, but at least this way you have some limited capabilities to reorder and group Bookmarks.

That 'Show All Bookmarks' popup is the same one you get from 'Show All History', and is utterly useless for anything I've ever tried to do. I suspect it only exists because it mirrors the way the data in stored internal to Firefox, and a lot of the developers seem to think that actually means something. (guess)

PS: The sidebar is also available via Ctrl-B, at least in Firefox V:5 under Windose. Someone else will have to supply the incantations for MAC, Linux, and the rest.

Thank you Helper. I had missed those updates and they really are quite important. All now loaded and shipshape. Thanks also to seybernetx for pointing at Sidebar - and your remark, "utterly useless". Worse. This is the third time I have written this reply. Attempts one and two were whisked into thin air when I opened Sidebar and set off the hair trigger links. Have ticked helpful for both replies, but not ticked "solved It" - but that is due to my fault. I seek the old function organise/manage Bookmarks in order to snip off the extended names of the links. It is enough for me to know that a link is to say, RBS. I do not need a trail of text flaunting the services they provide. Names, especially in a list, should, like haircuts, be short and neat. Seems I must live with messy lists, but compensation in your very kind replies to my query. aymonn

I prefer 'Manage Bookmarks' to 'Show All Bookmarks', it just makes more sense. It's a better description of what I want to do.

^ Like it makes a difference what that menu item is named. It works as it works, regardless of what it is called. Manage Bookmarks hasn't been used since Firefox 1.0 (Helper7677 as off by a few versions), Organize Bookmarks was the name with 1.5 thru 3.6.

It appears those that beta test every new version of Firefox have never tested the one prior. Version 4 of Firefox omitted the ability to manage and back-up and restore your Bookmarks as well stop supporting many security identifiers like AVAST as well as relocating addons like Download Helper to a new dedicated Add-On Bar that is hidden by default. Version 4 also offered a very large memory hole in the Container Plugin that even those with more than 16GB of RAM would run out of memory with more than 2 Flash games running do to severe memory fragmentation. I think version was canned and 5 rolled out. Version 5 of Firefox though continued where 4 left off by also not making it easy to manage, save, and input your bookmarks. I'm told it's there still, just finding it can be a task. Sorry to say, even with version 5's nice fast browsing speed, I had to go back to 3.6, just to have my Avast validate sites, Download Helper work, and be able to back up my bookmarks with ease. Sorry, not to much help here.

Hi,

If I understand KCPTECH correctly, the 5.xxx versions of Firefox do not have an "Organize Bookmarks" capability. I cannot manage, save, input, delete bookmarks? That inability is, for me, a huge drawback. Is there a quick "fix" for this? If the Organize Bookmarks still exists, how can I get to it?

How can I delete bookmarks that I considered only temporary? Do I have to return to 3.6? Thanks for any help.

LitProfFF:

Obviously you and KCPTECH did not read the whole thread (all posts above). The answer is there!!

Hi, All,

I figured out how to delete the temporary bookmarks - right click mouse and click delete in the pop-up box.

Thanks gelyon, the new name 'show all bookmarks' is a pointless and confusing change from 'organise bookmarks' and 'manage bookmarks'. 'Organise bookmarks' gets my vote.

To re-iterate: show all bookmarks is on the file menu -> Bookmark menu drop-down and is the same as the old Organise bookmarks renamed stupidly.

Actually, Mr. the-edmeister, it does make a difference. Changing the name of a function just because some goofball up in an ivory tower somewhere thinks the change is clever is dumb, pointless, and several other things I'd probably get in trouble for saying.

I've been away - no access to PC. Alerted by Kvoter's comments, I reread the thread and discovered that Helper had flagged the solution to my problem - I just did not listen carefully enough. "show all Bookmarks" = the old "manage" and gives me access to the wordy titles which I can snip down to neat, helpful descriptions. Again thanks to all you very able people for helpful comments and a solution to my problem. If only all my IT grumbles could be "cured" as efficiently.

With a little help I got there, fiddled around found it. So for amateurs like me who just want to sort their bookmarks by name, here it is: Go to Bookmarks drop down menu. Click on >>>Show all bookmarks. Click on>>>> Bookmarks Menu, then right- click, there you see 'sort by name', click it, your list is sorted! It does seem strange to make something so much harder to use than the old simple 'Organise Bookmarks', I think sometimes very clever techno guys don't realise some of us aren't as expert! Firefox technos, get it sorted please!
