I've loved Firefox for years but can no longer use it because I have been unable to resolve this issue. All was well, an update was done, and bingo, I got this message. I don't know how to fix it. I removed Firefox from my desktop and re-installed. Same problem.

This has been an issue for years, apparently, and has been addressed here on multiple occasions. A comprehensive article is here https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fix-bookmarks-and-history-will-not-be-functional. This gives directions on how to fix, hopefully. The "why", best I can tell, is corruption of sql databases, the cause of which above my paygrade but is often attributed to unexpected shutdowns, like crashes and such. Good luck.
