I run Firefox under Linux Mint. Both are always update to the latest level. Over the past 1 to 1.5 years, across updates to both Firefox and Mint and multiple 'clean' installs of Firefox, I have experienced many crashes from Firefox per week. Sometimes there will be as many as 5 per day, but never less than one per day. During the same period I have also been running Vivaldi; it has not crashed once in that time. Now I have to do something. If there is a simple way to perform 'problem source identification', that is within my capability, I would be grateful for advice. If there is not, then clearly I will have to un-install Firefox.

As far as I can tell both of these browsers run with just 1 add-on/extension: uBlock Origin. Disabling this extension in Firefox does not stop Firefox from crashing.

What version of Firefox? What Desktop? X11 or Wayland? Does it happens with other regular users or root? What happens with your OS when running via usb live stick? Try downloading Firefox from Mozilla, run firefox-bin from the folder and see if you have the same issue. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/#product-desktop-release

I can't quite clearly see what is the easy method for doing problem source identification here, but I porvide what information I can - but I infer from your reply that there is no easy method.

"What version of Firefox?" 'About Firefox' says: " mint-001 - 1.0 Updates disabled by your organisation 137.02 (64 bit)"

I don't have an organisation; this is a private home PC install of Linux Mint and Firefox. I have no way of choosing whether to disable or enable updates.

"What Desktop?" Cinnamon 6.4.8 running on Linux Mint 22.1

"X11 or Wayland?" X11

"Does it happens with other regular users or root?" There are no other regular users on this PC. I run root only as 'sudo' so I am not doing anything with Firefox at the time. I don't recall Firefox crashing while I am in this mode.

"What happens with your OS when running via usb live stick?" I never run from a USB live stick as I would not know how to save any data that I have created when running in this mode. Actually the question is well beyond my ability to answer - 'what happens with your OS ...' is a question that probably requires referral to the Mint team, to Canonical and to the Debian Project and would, I expect, require a very large amount of discussion and negotiation to decide exactly what the question is.

"Try downloading Firefox from Mozilla, run firefox-bin from the folder and see if you have the same issue." The "Install Firefox .deb package for Debian-based distributions (Recommended)" procedure on the Mozilla web-site involves 6 major steps with no clear statement what is going to happen to the existing 'mint-001 - 1.0 install of Firefox if I were to run them. The implication is that the deb package will affect the current install and, possibly, prevent further updates to Firefox - which I appear to receive every week or so via the Mint Update Manager. I am reluctant to do this before being assured that there will be no problem having 2 different versions of Firefox installed, from 2 different repositories. How would I choose/know which version is running?

Overall I take it that I am not actually running Firefox as distributed my Mozilla, but a modified version distributed by the Mint team. So should I be reporting my problems on the Mint Community Forum, rather than here within Mozilla.org?

You can report issues to us.

Regarding Firefox says it’s being managed by my organization

In Linux Mint the Update Manager is responsible for all software updates, and applying updates requires root privileges.

“Your browser is being managed by your organization” might look a bit scary but all it means is that Firefox was told to not worry about updating itself.

In the About dialog, “Updates disabled by your system administrator” has the same meaning.

Regarding Crashes

Please follow the steps below to provide us crash IDs to help us learn more about your crash.

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

  1. Enter about:crashes in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A list of Submitted (and Unsubmitted, if any) Crash Reports will appear, similar to the one shown below.
  2. Copy the 5 most recent Submitted Report IDs that start with bp- and then go back to your forum question and paste those IDs into the "Post a Reply" box.

Note: If a recent Report ID does not start with bp- click on it to submit the report.

(Please don't take a screenshot of your crashes, just copy and paste the IDs. The below image is just an example of what your Firefox screen should look like.)
