I am looking for a solution that will allow links to open in the same tab rather than tab, tab, tab, tab, tab, tab, tab. I am also having issue with sign ins opening a new blank tab and not having the ability to sign in at all. I've been using Firefox since I quit Netscape. And yes, I tried many epic fails that were disguised as solutions that don't work. I'm seriously about to give up on this browser if I can't get what I had after a SSD drive fail that forced me to reinstall from the ground up.

Step 1: Configure Link Opening Behavior

To ensure that links open in the same tab rather than creating new tabs, you can adjust the settings in Firefox:

   Open Firefox and type about:config in the address bar, then press Enter.
   You may see a warning message; click on "Accept the Risk and Continue."
   In the search bar at the top, type browser.link.open_newwindow.
   You should see a preference named browser.link.open_newwindow. The default value is usually 3, which means links will open in a new tab. Change this value to 1 to open links in the same tab:
       1 = Open in the same tab.
       2 = Open in a new window.
       3 = Open in a new tab.
   If you want to ensure that links from other applications (like email clients) also open in the same tab, look for browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction and set it to 0.

Step 2: Addressing Blank Tabs on Sign-In

If sign-in pages are opening as blank tabs, this could be due to several reasons, including extensions, privacy settings, or cached data. Here are some steps to troubleshoot:

   Clear Cache and Cookies:
       Click on the menu button (three horizontal lines) in the top right corner.
       Go to Settings (or Options).
       Select Privacy & Security.
       Under Cookies and Site Data, click on Clear Data and select both options to clear.
   Disable Extensions:
       Some extensions can interfere with sign-in processes. Disable all extensions temporarily:
       Click on the menu button and select Add-ons and themes.
       Go to the Extensions tab and disable all extensions.
       Restart Firefox and try signing in again.
   Check Privacy Settings:
       In the Privacy & Security panel, ensure that your settings are not overly restrictive. You might want to set Enhanced Tracking Protection to Standard temporarily to see if that resolves the issue.
   Test in Safe Mode:
       Start Firefox in Safe Mode to see if the issue persists:
       Click on the menu button, go to Help, and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
       In the Safe Mode dialog, click Restart.
       Try signing in again.
   Check for Updates:
       Ensure that Firefox is up to date. Click on the menu button, go to Help, and select About Firefox. Firefox will check for updates and install them if available.

Step 3: Reset Firefox (if necessary)

If the above steps do not resolve the issues, you may consider resetting Firefox to its default state. This will remove extensions and custom settings but keep your bookmarks and saved passwords:

   Click on the menu button and select Help.
   Choose More Troubleshooting Information.
   Click on Refresh Firefox.

Additional Tips

   If you continue to experience issues, consider creating a new Firefox profile to see if the problem is related to your current profile. You can do this by typing about:profiles in the address bar and creating a new profile.
   If you have specific sites that consistently cause issues, check their permissions by clicking the lock icon in the address bar and adjusting settings as needed.
