i ended up going back into my profiles & making a new one & opening it. this then led me back to the profiles & clicking on the correct one [top one]. which opened & when i checked what version it was it then asked for an update, which i did & now it's all back to normal [thankfully!]. i had originally gone thru most of the links supplied & some others trying to workout what i could do to restore.

the folders all had the same date, however time was different. i believe i went oldest & now with the update it shows current date/time.

Thanks for pointing me in the right/correct direction. i would not have got there otherwise :)

Sometimes when the browser thinks there is a problem with the profile, it will create a new one.

Look on your desktop. Do you see a folder called; Old Firefox? Look inside. Look for the folder with the latest creation date.

Well done.

Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles {web link} I use a Legacy add-on that makes backups of my user profile, Just In Case. Unfortunately, it is not compatible with the current Firefox.

Every now and then, open the profile folder and create a copy of the current profile as is to another location on your hard drive. This way you will have a backup.

If you do this each day, you will not lose much data. This should be done with Firefox Closed.

Note: In case you need to restore from these backups, you may need to overwrite old or corrupted files.

Go to your local department/electronics store and look around for a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) that is useful for you. The lowest price is $50 +. There are also units on the market that plug into the computer. So, if the battery gets low, it will shut down the computer to protect it.

Note: Sudden power loss can damage or destroy a hard drive's data.
