Deleted auto-fill entry still auto-fills in address bar (v83.0)

more options

I'll occasionally run into Firefox auto-filling another website address I don't want, but I just figured out that it's Shift+Delete and not Delete to remove an auto-fill entry (a rather asinine change, I thought). Unfortunately, clearing out the unwanted address did not work and the address still auto-fills in the U.R.L. bar (see picture).

If deleting auto-fill entries doesn't actually work, what will?

I've always been curious about this, as well, but how does Firefox determine what address auto-fills if I type in a couple of letters? Does it keep a running tally of how many times I've searched for/visited a particular site and use that data? This would be useful to know for the future.

The in-URL-bar autofill feature doesn't have a way to clear sites through the address bar. Possibly this will do it:

  • Open the Library window using Ctrl+Shift+h to show history
  • Search the unwanted site in the tiny search box at the upper right corner to find its history entries
  • Right-click any entry and use the "Forget About This Site" option to deeply scrub that site from Firefox's memory (history, cookies, permissions, etc.)

Hopefully that will work.

Can we bump issues here?

(I guess we can)

I have no idea why most everything I found online indicated you could clear the auto-fill addresses through the U.R.L. bar, but your solution worked. I hadn't come across the "Forget About This Site" feature before, but it appears to have done the trick nicely. Appreciate it!

Do we know the parameters for the auto-fill? As in, what determines if either "Discover" or "Discord" auto-fills when typing in "dis"?

I used to think it was alphabetical, but to be honest, I haven't studied it closely. (I turn it off in about:config, browser.urlbar.autoFill)
