How can I make messages be markes as "read" once they are read, rather than marked as "read" as soon as they are displayed in the Inbox?

There is an option in "options" to mark messages as read immediately on display. This marks emails as read as soon as they are listed in the Inbox. That is not the same as an email being read. How can I set this up so that emails are marked as "unread" when displayed on the inbox list but marked as "Read" once they have been opened and read?
