ad blocker won't download and looks like it is frozen in download

I had to revert my computer back to an earlier date and reinstall Windows 10. That must have gotten rid of my ad blocker, which worked amazingly. Now, when I try to download any ad blocker on the firefox extension page, It says "downloading" but nothing is happening and I can't even "x" it out.

Which adblocker were you using before? AdBlock Plus? If so, you can try downloading ABP from its official website at https://adblockplus.org/

The same thing happened. I clicked to install from the adblockplus site. I clicked to allow at top address bar. It shows a quick download saying a few seconds remaining and it stays like that. Those few seconds never end.

1) Check to see if the Firefox cache is disabled.

  • Go to the menu New Fx Menu-> Options.
  • Click the Advanced</t> tab then on the <i>Network tab/
  • In the Cache section, the size of the cache must be at least 1 MB.
  • Close the about:preferences page. Any changes you've made will automatically be saved.

Note: If you use the CA firewall, Windows Defender, or the resident option of Spybot S&D ("Teatimer" feature), you should temporarily disable the software to see if your system permits the add-on to install. For more information, see the documentation that came with your software.


2) You can try to re-generate the extension files. Corrupt extension configuration files can cause problems when trying to install an extension. Deleting these files will make Firefox recreate them (removing any corruption) the next time it starts. You won't lose your extensions or their settings by deleting these files.

  • Open your Profile Folder
    • Click the menu button New Fx Menu , click Help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. The Troubleshooting Information tab will open.
  • Under the Application Basics section, click on Show Folder. A window with your profile files will open.
  • Delete the following files
    • extensions.sqlite
    • extensions.sqlite-journal (if found)
    • extensions.ini
    • extensions.json
  • Restart Firefox

It is possible that security software (anti-virus, firewall) is causing the problem. Try to disable security software temporarily to see if that makes a difference.

Is it possible that Microsoft Defender is keeping the ad blocker from installing? I tried what Moses suggested and it still didn't work.

By the way, I just downloaded adblockerplus on my netbook that runs on windows 7. No problems at all.
