Firefox sends a message saying there's a party trying to get me to falsely update my account. Suspect source.
I get a prompt that looks like Firefox, that says an outside party is trying to use Firefox by prompting for an update, but it's not from a trusted source. Is someone trying to hack my browser?

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then best is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox application and save the disk image file to the desktop

- Trash the current Firefox application (open the Applications folder in the Finder and drag the Firefox application to the Trash) to do a clean (re)install
- Install the new version that you have downloaded

Your personal data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data when you uninstall and (re)install or update Firefox.

Do you have a screenshot of it? Sounds like it may be a malware redirect. Have you tried running spybot search and destroy?
I'm using avassti virus scan ongoingly. Don't have a screenshot yet, but will get one next time.
There is an update available, and you can use the "About Firefox" dialog to start the process. Please see this article: Update Firefox to the latest release.
I'm updated already. First thing I checked. This has been going on for a couple fo weeks now with the false prompt.
Oh, that's strange. The reason I mentioned that was that your Firefox reported itself to be version 37, but the current release is 38.0.5. Maybe the problem is that your Firefox is mistakenly reporting itself as an old version.
Could you check what is listed on this internal support info page (either):
- "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
- (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
- type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter
Version is listed in the Basic Information table.
If it lists 38.0.5, you may need to clear a preference using the about:config page. See: How to reset the default user agent on Firefox.
On the other hand, if it is an older version but the About Firefox dialog isn't finding it, you might need to update manually. I'll defer to a Mac expert on that, since it's completely different than Windows.
