thunderbird stuck in loop can not download messages from server

Thunderbird appears to be stuck. Normal mode i get "connected to server..." and sometimes "checking mail server capabilities", but that is as far as it goes. In safe mode i get "connection to server timed out". I had been able to force the program to load messages by switching folders, but no longer. I am running AVast, and disabling it makes no difference. OS windows 7. Tried re-installing Tbird, no help. Ideas?

Is that windows safe mode with networking? Please try that.

Have tried that with the stated results. I have been able to "force" Thunderbird to retrieve messages again after rebooting tonight by doing some other action such as emptying junk, but the program still will not retrieve messages at start or automatically while running,
