I am trying to update from 6.0.2 to 7.0 and it keeps saying Firefox must be closed first. but NOTHING else is open except the Install window.

I have windows XP and am trying to update my version of Firefox. I currently cannot open Firefox at all from my shortcut or directly from the program list. i had to go in through Safari to open it and then tried to update the version.

Hi kshikuma. This happens to me sometimes, as well.

To solve this issue, open the Windows Task Manager by hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del.

Go to the "Processes" tab and see if a process named "firefox.exe" or "plugin-container.exe" is opened. Close any and all such processes by right-clicking them and selecting "End Process".

thank you so much. this was a big help. i was not able to reply to thank you sooner, because after i did what you suggested, it was working for awhile and then i kept getting a message that firefox had crashed. i've been getting this for two days now! i finally figured out how to remove the old program, and was able to successfully download 7.0.1. But now, when i try to get in to the site, it's asking me what i want to "open it" with! I have no clue what to select, since I don't remember having to do this the last time i downloaded or updated firefox! Can you help? just to get to your last reply, i had to copy the url from the original email i got and pasted it into safari. if want, you can email my regular address, at kshikuma@ca.rr.com or just reply here and hopefully, i'll get another email and be able to find this again. thanks.
