1/16/2011 today - Avast antivirus said "suspicious files found" This is the file that is suspicious:

C::\Documents and Settings\Mishcka\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\PPOF9pzi.default\gtb-metrics.xml
My malware didn't pick anything up.
This is a Mozilla Firefox file. What should I do?

Also I cannot log into my mailbox because (12169) "server's certificate is invalid. Also Microsoft Shield Defense has disappeared. I don't know if these things are related but my gmail is getting very screwed up.

That file is not a part of Firefox, it is part of the Google Toolbar. There is probably nothing wrong with the file, but you could uninstall the Google Toolbar which should remove that file, then if you want the toolbar re-install it so that a new copy of the gtb-metrics.xml file is created.
