Firefox 140.10.2esr - old version and won't load profile
Hi all,
Firefox 140.10.2esr Windows 11
Opened Firefox this morning and it said I was using an old version of Firefox and it couldn't load my profile. I have always used the esr version.
I had a look at the compatibility.ini file under my profile and it had version 150.xx. Is that a bug with the last update?
To recover I backed up my profile then changed the compatibility version to the version of Firefox I am using. I was able to load my profile and while all my bookmarks and settings are there, my saved credentials are not. The key4.db and logins.json file are both still under my profile folder, they just don't seem to be recognised; no errors. Viewing the logins.json shows my encrypted credentials.
Does anyone know what is going on and how to resolve?
thanks
j

Hey there - Sorry this happened, but we are very interested in helping understand what went wrong.
I have a few questions about your system and a suggestion to fix your logins problem.
- Do you have any copies of Firefox installed other than ESR? For example, did you have an old copy of 150 Release that you accidentally launched the day before this bug occurred?
- Is your device a personal device or a managed device, for example a work or school machine?
- Did you recently restore your system from backups, or make any other significant changes?
To fix this, I would suggest using Firefox Sync. (Note that Firefox Sync is encrypted on your device; the data that transits Mozilla's servers is fully encrypted and we do not have the key.) To do this, you would:
- reopen your profile in Firefox 150 if you have it installed (or if not, just launch it in current release Firefox)
- in your profile in release channel Firefox, sign in to sync, making sure the sync settings include all the data you'd want to keep.
- Then, launch ESR with a fresh profile
- Sign in to sync in ESR using the same account, and all your data should populate over.
If you'd rather not use Sync, you may be able to do something similar using Backups, but I'm less familiar with that feature. There's plenty of info about both Sync and Backups here on SUMO.
Hope this helps!
