Look at Preferences -> General "When new messages arrive:" Uncheck "Show an alert" and select any other choices you want.
You are looking for Options and not Preferences since you are on Windows and not a MAC.
You need to explore the Options settings. They are there so you can set the system up like you prefer.
From the menu Bar select Tools-Options-General
or
From the AppMenu button, click the AppMenu button, hover over Options, click Options-General
