Thunderbird freezes after one or two operations and needs to be restarted again. Why and how can I fix this?

Switching to Windows 10 has not made any difference in performance. Occasionally I can get several operations (delete message, open, forward etc.) before the program freezes. The program restarts ok when closed after freezing, but having to restart after each operation is frustrating.
